Our Web Site Has a New Look!

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

During the last board meeting, it was decided that our web site needed some changes.  Below is a list of changes that have been made.

  • The most obvious change is the totally new look and feel of our web site.  We have changed our web site to be a “blog” style.  A blog is more like a diary for a web site.  As new content is added, it is added in the form of a “post”.  And posts are displayed in the web site so that the latest post is displayed first.  Posts are also categorized so that posts that are related in content can be easily located.  We think you will find this style easier to use and you will be able to find the latest information about our club.
  • Another reason for the change to a blog style web site was to allow other people to make content changes without the person having a lot of computer experience.  For example, before changing to a blog style web site, when our newsletter was published, it required our webmaster to do it.  By changing to a blog style, “non-techies” have the capability to publish the newsletter or any other content to our web site. This means we have reduced the time it takes to get our newsletter and other information on our website.
  • In an effort to reduce the amount of work and inadvertent errors in notifying our members of newsletter postings, this style of web site will allow you to “subscribe” to new posts.  We will be posting a how-to on how you can setup a subscription.

To help you become familiar with the new web site here are some things you should know. On the right side, you will find the following sections.

  • Search - This allows you to enter some keyword or phrase and search the web site for the keyword or phrase.  If matches are found, the results will be presented in a list.  This feature allows you to quickly find a post.
  • Categories - This section allows you to quickly see all the posts that have been assigned to the selected category.  For example, if you wanted to see all the newsletter posts, click on the Newsletter category and all posts related to newsletters will be displayed
  • Archives - This works much like the Categories in that it groups posts by Month/Year.  If you want to see what was posted for last month, then click on the appropriate link and all posts made for that month/year will be displayed.
  • Pages - This section provides links to dedicated pages for other types of content on our web site.  For example, if you want to get to a list of popular woodworking links, you can click on the Club Links link.  Or if you want to print out the WAA application form, click on the Application link.
  • Links - This section is much like the Pages section in that it provides addition navigation to other areas of our web site.

Some additional information you should be aware of is about the posts themselves.  When you are viewing the Home page, posts are listed in the middle portion of the web site and are in an order of newest to oldest.  The most recent 10 posts are displayed at one time.  At the bottom of the list of posts will be links to navigate to previous posts or newer posts.  Depending on how a post was created, sometimes all of the post will be displayed and other times you may need to click on the post Title to see all of the post content.  By clicking on the title, you will be navigated to the full post.  This post happens to be designed to display all of it at once and you don’t need to click on the Title.

Another thing to know about posts is for each post there is a link at the bottom of the post to comment on the post.  This allows you to leave a comment about the post for other viewers to see.  In addition, each post has a link that allows you to see a “printer friendly” version of the post.

We hope you will find the new look and the new features of our web site to be beneficial.  If you should find that you have questions or problems, please feel free to email our webmaster by clicking on the appropriate link in the Links section.

Happy woodworking and internet surfing!
